The island of Taiwan has for centuries been ruled by different peoples. Up until the 17th century indigineous tribes ruled, Then the Dutch took it as a trading port. The remnants of the Ming dynasty under Guoxingye took it from the Dutch and then the Manchu Qing dynasty
took it in 1683 when it first came part of China. The French took control very briefly in 1884. Then control passed to Japan who ruled 1895 until 1945. It was the Nationalist leader Chiang Kaishek
who fled there is 1949 as a government in exile. The conflicts with the Peoples Republic have gradually diminished only recently. Read More
