Bats are commonly used in handicrafts, paintings and artwork to give a wish for good luck. This is because 'bat' and 'good luck' sound the same in Chinese.

Shanghai International Settlement

It is now little known that the great city of Shanghai is a foreign invention, this is due to Chinese pride and a wish to forget the humilation of the past. When Britain took Shanghai in 1842 it was a small fishing town, in 1854 a wise move made the trading port an International Settlement technically independent of any foreign power but dominated by the British. Trade flourished and was called a 'Model Settlement' with foreign powers and local Chinese working in harmony. By 1920 it had grown to 3,000,000 people and called the 'Paris of the East'. Its foreign past caused the Communist government to shut down many businesses in the period to 1975, since which time it has flourished and grown again.
