Latin Treaty

When the Russians and Chinese came to make a treaty in 1689 they had a problem. They needed a language that both sides could understand, Russian or Chinese would not do. So the compromise was to write the Treaty of Nerchinsk in latin. Latin was known to the Russians and in China the Jesuit mission was still active and they could freely translate between Chinese and latin.
