It was completed in 2006 and had three benefits: generation of 80 GW/h of hydro-electric power; flood prevention and better navigation up to Chongqing. It has the largest lock system in the world to enable ships to pass up and downstream. A ship can take nearly 3 hours to pass through the locks.
