Hidden kingdom

For centuries the province of Sichuan has lain hidden in the mountains. Up until recently, the main access point was Chongqing on the Yangzi. When the rest of China was embattled the ancient Chinese traditions have lived on in Sichuan. As late as the Second World War 'Free China' had its capital at Chongqing (then part of Sichuan) when most of Eastern China was under Japanese occupation. The 'Red basin' has been an important bread basket for the rest of China with high agricultural yields of rice, vegetables, tea and even tobacco.
