China's rail network

The development of railways in China 1860-1920 was driven by foreign capitalists. Different foreign nations built their own railways within their spheres of influence. This led to widespread resentment among Chinese people and it was not until 1949 that China started building its own network. The mountainous terrain over much of western China makes railways difficult to build; a link through to Tibet was only made in 2006. Proportionate to its size of population China still has a small network and recently it has been the construction of road and air links that has taken priority.
