China stood up

The proclamation founding the People's Republic of China took place on 1st October 1949 before a vast sea of jubilant people in Tiananmen Square. Mao's speech did not contain the phrase 'China has stood up', what was actually used in the speech given on September 21st was ‘Fellow Delegates, we are all convinced that our work will go down in the history of mankind, demonstrating that the Chinese people, comprising one quarter of humanity, have now stood up.’. He went on to say ‘Ours will no longer be a nation subject to insult and humiliation. We have stood up.’
