Burning the books
One of the actions that the First Qin Emperor Shihuangdi is famous for is 'the burning of the books'. Although this is seen as a repressive and authoritarian move it has to be put in context. One of the reasons for the move was to impose a single written language over the whole nation, destroying the old books was intended to accelerate this process.
