Song dynasty

History

The Song dynasty is a period of Chinese refinement and peace rather than military prowess. Great strides were taken in the creative arts and literature. Prosperity from the growing trade by sea rather than overland fueled the building of huge cities. The eventual conquest by the Mongol hordes brought the dynasty to a tragic close.

Luding bridge

The taking of the Luding bridge on May 25th 1935 was portrayed as the most heroic event of the Communist Long March under Mao Zedong through Western China. The propaganda of the 1950s and 60s showed dozens of fearless troops grasping the chains above the surging Li river uner machine gun fire. The Communist Army was trapped on one bank of the river and faced annihilation if they stayed put. However the event was probably not as dramatic as it was portrayed, the resistance on the other bank of the river seems to have been fairly minimal.
