A strange name you sometimes see for China is 'Cathay'. This needs a little explaining, it is not self evident just like the name 'China' itself. The name Cathay is mainly used in Russia and Central Asia. This is because the name is derived from the northern Chinese tribe of Khitan or Qidan.
