The dragon boat festival is held in June, its date follows the Chinese lunar calendar and so moves around each year. Most web sites will tell you that it celebrates the life of poet Qu Yuan [343 - 278 BCE] who committed suicide when false allegations were made against him. The legend is that people went out in boats looking for him, and hence the origin of the dragon boat festival. The festival however has older roots, the favorite kingly creature are Chinese dragons which hold mastery over all the waters, in ancient times people used to make offerings to the dragon kings to guarantee ample rain for the crops.
