This German's claim to fame is that he was the German ambassador assassinated during the Boxer Rebellion (1898-1901). The killing led to an escalation of an already heated conflict. The foreign embassies refused to leave the city and the 'Siege of the Legations' in Beijing began, they were eventually rescued by a joint Allied force 55 days later. The Rebellion marked a further major reduction of Manchu control of China.
